During Hurricane Irma, on Sept. 11th, Apollo Elementary School in Brevard County lost power from the electric grid and had no traditional backup generator, however, thanks to 10 kW of solar coupled with battery energy storage installed with grant funding through the Florida Solar Energy Center several years ago, one building had lights and outlets for evacuees’ phones and nebulizers, as well as a coffee maker.
